It's been a while since I blogged, but I've not been lazy...I've been getting ready for my veggie growing season. You can feel summer just round the corner; the days are getting longer and the air’s warmer, not enough to leave the seedlings unprotected, but warmer all the same. At the start or the growing period you really need your wits about you, ever vigilant with sprouting seedlings, or they bolt, end up leggie, ruining all your hard work. Then come the army of slugs, snails who can’t wait to chomp through all your hard work. I’ve been trying to grow veggies for the last two years in pots in my garden; this I’ve dug up a flowerbed that contained hardy geraniums and other cottage plants. These have been distributed to work colleagues as my family and friends have had enough already and I couldn’t just chuck ’em out.
Every thing must go!
So while I build up to sides to form some raised beds, I’ve got my seeds in pot’s and on the kitchen windowsill.
Runner bean in my fizzy bottle propagator!
I’m sewing:
Dwarf French bean ‘ Tender Crop’ – this variety is generally disease and trouble free (so it say’s on the packet!)
I was given a dwarf variety of French beans last year. I grew them in pot and they where prolific croppers and tasty too!
Runner Bean ‘Celebration’ early cropper and RHS AGM Winner, perfect for wigwams, it's ornamental has flashy pods and pink flowers instead of red and maintains production throughout the summer, and is British bred.
I’ve also got striped Tomatoes, Beetroot (never manage to get these to grow yet), Radish, Q’s, Potatoes, Lettuce and Strawberries (runners from my Mums plants). I’ve also replanted my Herb colander as this worked well last year.
Striped Toms - These are 3-4 weeks old.
Strawberries
Will it all grow? Who knows, I’m going to list it all up here with my failures/successes and take loads of photos to show the progress from seed to plant to plate. I welcome any advice, especially about beetroot and would love to here about your veggie growing too!
